Welcome to Muslims in Michigan

The Muslims in Michigan project was formed out a partnership between Michigan Radio and the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. This five part radio series examines life for Muslim people living in Michigan. Beyond religion, the series explores the cultural, political, ethnic, and social lives of this diverse group. This project also features film events, speakers, and a community conversation. The calendar can be found on the Events page.

The radio series premieres on April 12, 2010 and will air during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Apr 12 – Muslim Courting – Jen Guerra (includes an extra interview exclusive to the web)
Apr 13 – Building a Mosque in West Michigan – Dustin Dwyer (includes a video feature)
Apr 14 – Muslim Mortgages – Sarah Hulett
Apr 15 – Muslim Student in Christian College – Dustin Dwyer
Apr 16 – Converting to Islam – Sarah Hulett (includes a video or slideshow feature)

We will also have a photo slideshow on how Halal Meat is made.

    Is there concern by the parents that as their children live within the larger community, they will change from traditional Muslim culture and religious practice?

    That's definitely a concern. I hope it's brought up in the community discussion.

    Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan (CIOM) has organized an 'Open House' in mosques accross the SE Michigan on Satruday, May 15th, 2010. visit www.ciomonline.com for more information.
    Mosques invite public to get to know their Muslim neighbor. Food will be served. Islamic art will be on display.
